Congress VI
May 21-24,1987
The Sixth Congress
started a National Movement calling African Americans to take a more
active role in articulating the concerns of Black Catholics. Nearly
1,500 delegates and observers, several hundred priests and over fifty
bishops filled the National Shrine of The Immaculate Conception on May
21, 1987, for the Opening Mass of The National Black Catholic
Congress. This Sixth Congress convened in Washington, D.C. on May 21 -
24, 1987.
The main work of the
Congress was the formulation and approval of a National Black Catholic
Pastoral Plan. A more complete account of Congress VI is contained in
an article, "The National Black Catholic Congress of 1987: An Event of
The Century" (The Josephite Harvest, Volume 89, Number 2, Summer
1987). |
