Nurturing Children Around the World
By Dr. Camille Brown

On another trip, we drove nine hours to reach a village where a school was recently built by a private businessman. Our task was to deliver school supplies and visit the chief. The private businessman thought that two educators from the United States might influence the chief to advise his people to send their sons and daughters to the new school. In the end, the chief said "they can do what they want". The people decided that they wanted their sons to receive an education but the daughters needed to stay in the village and learn how to care for a house, children, etc.
We could also recant the argument that I had with a contractor about installing flushing toilets in the new school. I felt that a brand new school could have pipes and a compressor with flushing toilets. The contractor, on the other hand, said, "no school or household in the area has flushing
toilets. In fact, the children have never seen flushing toilets, so why install them?" This
argument did not sway my thinking. The only facts that convinced me to give up flushing toilets were 1)There are no plumbers in the area 2)There is nothing like a hardware store or Home Depot anywhere in the area 3) When the toilets/pipes broke, who would repair them? In the end, we settled on culturally traditional bathrooms with a well nearby to keep them clean.
