St. Jude woman wins regional recognition at Catholic Conference
Congratulations to Chantal Fleming, a parishioner of
St. Jude in Sumter, South Carolina, who received the coveted 'Claver Woman of
the Year' Award at the 2009 Knights of Peter Claver Gulf Coast District
Conference. Chantal, one of the youngest to receive the award, overcame a
competitive field of 11 ladies from seven states to win this recognition, which
is given for service to church and community.
The Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary is
a Catholic organization dedicated to spiritual enrichment, evangelization and
service. It is part of the oldest of African American Catholic traditions,
celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2009. St. Jude parish and the Diocese of
Charleston is located in the Gulf Coast District, which covers 7 states. The
District Conference was held in Mobile, Alabama, the birthplace of Claverism.
Chantal, Director of the Trio Student Support
Services at Orangeburg Calhoun Technical College, has served as Grand Lady of
the KPC Ladies Auxiliary at the Parish level, and has the distinction of service
in the membership of Father Egbert J. Figaro, Chapter 45, Ladies of Grace. She
has volunteered on District committees, and contributes to the continued
expansion of the St. Jude group. She is extensively involved in community
service activities. She is the daughter of the late Sir Knight Louis Fleming,
Sumter County Council Chairman and one of the founding members of the Knights of
Peter Claver at St. Jude, who passed away in 2007, and Gracious Lady Emma
Fleming, active member of Father Egbert J. Figaro Chapter 45.
