Franciscan Handmaids of Mary

The Franciscan Handmaids of Mary are a congregation of Roman Catholic women who have chosen to follow the call of God in the steps of St Francis of Assisi. Their primary mission has always been education. Currently, they staff St Benedict's Day Nursery in Harlem, conduct Camp St Edward on Staten Island and teach in several parochial schools in Harlem.

The Josephites

The Josephites (St. Joseph's Society of the Sacred Heart, S.S.J.) was founded by Mill Hill Fathers in 1871. The Josephites came to Baltimore with four priests, their mission was to evangelize African Americans. Their efforts were so successful that in 1892, they were made independent of the Mill Hill Fathers. The Josephites established its headquarters in Baltimore in 1893. Black missions soon followed in Charleston, Louisville, Norfolk, Richmond, and Washington, D.C. The Josephites have established seminaries and educational institutions in Louisiana, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

The Society of the Divine Word

The Society of the Divine Word North American Province was found in 1897 with its headquarters in Illinois. The primary mission of the Society of the Divine Word is to call and train new missionaries to spread the work of Gospel worldwide. The first seminary for African Americans were formed by The Society of the Divine Word Fathers. St. Augustine Seminary opened in 1923, in Bay St. Louis, MS, to provide African American men with opportunity to become priests and brothers. The Society of the Divine Word is working in 62 countries around the world, and is now the 6th largest religious community of men in the Catholic Church.
