I hadn't initially planned on
attending the National Black Catholic Congress XI this year. I had many excuses
in my mind for reasons why I would not go. One day, however, almost in an
instance I decided that I would attend. I cannot explain what came over me. It
was not clear what I thought I would gain from going or why I had abruptly
decided to go; all I knew was that it felt right, and that I was making the
right decision.
I have attended Congresses in the past as a youth.
But now as a young adult, I believe I learned more from the experience. Perhaps
now, as I am developing my own relationship with God, I was able to comprehend
the various topics discussed in a deeper manner. One workshop in particular
really had an impact upon me. The theme of the workshop discussed how to grow in
faith. When we are children we are influenced by our parents' beliefs; but, as
we mature and grow it is important that our faith and relationship with God does
so as well. This was only one of many moments during Congress XI that I felt
particularly moved.
In the end, I am truly thankful that I had a change
of heart and decided to attend Congress XI. It is so easy to get caught up in
the hustle and bustle of life. If we are not careful oftentimes this becomes
breeding ground for the devil to try to have its way with us. It becomes easy to
get thrown off balance. Going to the National Black Catholic Congress XI helped
me to put many things back into perspective in terms of growing in my faith and
it also encouraged me to read my Bible more. It allowed me to become revitalized
in my faith.
Ever so often our cars need a tune-up; so does our
spiritual lives. Congress XI was an excellent way to do so. In addition, it was
a great opportunity to network with other dioceses, learn from the workshops,
and bring back what was learned to our own diocese. But most importantly, it
gave me a chance to worship with those from around the country.
I believe we represented the Diocese of
Pittsburgh well. I am glad that I went and look forward to Congress XII in
2017.
