ON, THEY HAVE NO WINE! Reflections on the Importance of Devotion to Mary

There is a growing trend in some Catholic institutions/communities that should be a cause for alarm to anyone entrusted with the care of souls and particularly with the spiritual formation of the youth. Respect for Life (cont.)

Some of us withhold support because we may have been involved in obtaining an abortion or counseling someone to get an abortion in the past. We may feel hypocritical in supporting life now when we played an active part in ending a life or lives in the past.

Seek true healing in the sacrament of reconciliation and know that your witness could be a powerful weapon in the fight against the evil of abortion. More importantly, your healing through the sacrament of reconciliation and conversion on this issue may be the last stumbling block you need to overcome in order to have a closer relationship with God.

Lastly, some of us believe other issues such as poverty, affirmative action, racism, or civil rights take precedence over the issue of abortion. This approach fails to recognize the right to life as the fundamental right upon which all other rights are based. If future generations of African Americans are deprived of the right to life then all victories we achieve today for any civil rights and equality are for naught.

Doctor King stated, "Cowardice asks the question, 'Is it safe?' Expediency asks the question, 'Is it politic?' Vanity asks the question, 'Is it popular?' But conscience asks the question, 'Is it right?' And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must take it because his conscience tells him that it is right."

Ask the Holy Spirit who is the Lord and giver of life to help you overcome your personal obstacles to embracing fully the Gospel of life and building a culture of life.
