Being single, black, and
Catholic is something that can't be fully addressed in one article.
People have written entire books on each one of these topics and being any
one of these groups presents its own particular challenges. I am a twenty-four
year old black male from Washington, DC. The Lord touched my life seven years
ago, while I was a freshman in college. Since then I have been striving to
live my life for Christ. I will share my experiences of being a single, black,
male in the Catholic Church. In short, it is a struggle.
I have participated in many retreats, and spoken to
numerous people about the faith and how the one thing that connects all of us
is the desire to be loved, the desire to know that at the end of the day somebody
cares whether you made it through. This desire for love motivates our every action,
from the way we dress to our relationships with others. The problem is that so many
times we look for love in all the wrong places and in all the wrong ways, and our
efforts at finding love leave us emptier than we were when we first began. In
reality the love that we are all searching for is freely given to us every day,
everywhere, and at every moment, by God.
Everything has to begin with Christ. If we don't look at
our life's situations through His eyes, we will easily find ourselves lost in a
confusing world. It is only through looking at our lives in the light of Christ
that we will see who we truly are and what a relationship is meant to be. By looking
at Christ we see the person who we are called to imitate and the only person who we
can't live without. At our weakest and strongest moments in life we are beloved
children who can do nothing without our Father.
