Breakthrough Sesions

A. "Keeping Your Hustle Holy" (Ansel Augustine, MPS)

If you or one of your friends are really struggling in life, what is the Catholic Church saying to you? What are you saying to the Church? If your life does not look completely saintly at first glance, does that mean it cannot be? This session will address a black Catholic teenager's ability to face difficulties in school, with the law, on the streets, or just trying to make it from day to day, and still live the holy life. Come to gain deeper insights on personal problems and ways of coping with them. Participants will come away with a better understanding of how to use "the hustle" as a tool to reach holiness.

(Offered twice)

B. "Making My Space God's Place" (Christopher Boudy)

Modern technology has black youth in all economic groups completely tuned-in and logged-on. As electronic gadgets transform society, they also change life in the Catholic Church. Come to this session for live demonstrations on how, when, where and why computers, web sites and popular digital devices can reboot your ministry and your life. Also, find out why digital technology, once a luxury of the wealthy, is now a way of life for nearly all youth. You'll come away understanding new ways to make cyberspace another instrument of God's glory. This session is "Church-at-another-level!"

(Offered twice for youth and once for adult youth ministers)

C. "When Players Are Pray-ers" (Marlon Favorite)

Young black athletes, both male and female, get a negative rep sometimes. With so many media stories about misconduct by famous athletes, and considering stereotypes that black athletes are dumb, athletic competition can be a hard road for some black youth. In addition, some older church members have difficulty relating to athletes because they are products of the Hip Hop Generation. What's a player (not playa) to do? Come to this session to check out the advantageous role athletics can play in your education, your personal development and your Christian witness to others. This session will beat down the myths and call forth your God-given gifts so you and your peers can play the game in completely new ways.

(Offered twice)

D. "Be You! Belong! Believe!" (Amanda Vernon)

There may be occasions when you feel awkward about who you are? Do other people or you ever question your Catholic faith, your morality or your reasons for doing what you do? Why should we trust in a God we cannot see with our eyes? What's wrong with having fun in the same ways everybody else in the crowd seems to be doing it? This interactive session will take you on a journey filled with song, storytelling and movement. You will come to grips with who you truly are and become less reliant on outside influences that seek to define you. Be ready to gain a stronger sense of yourself and the God Who dwells within you. You will leave this session with renewed self-esteem and courage to share your gifts and your Catholic faith without fear. Perhaps you will even be able to help some of your peers to do the same.

(Offered twice)
