Africa
Africa has about 10% of the world's population
but nearly 83% if the global total of HIV infected
people. According to United Nations Program on
HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) there are about 24.5 million
people infected with HIV/AIDS in Africa. According
to the National Council for Science and the
Environment's (NCSE) issue brief for Congress,
approximately 13.7 million Africans have died of
AIDS. The pandemic is currently the leading cause of
death on the African continent.
U.S.A
AIDS is the 2nd leading cause of death among
African Americans between the ages of 25 and 44 and
the 4th leading cause of death for Latinos in this
age group; for Caucasians AIDS is the 5th leading
cause of death.
Black Women are at greater risk than other women
of encountering a male partner who is infected with
HIV; they now have a higher incidence of AIDS than
any other group of women in the U.S., accounting for
63 percent of the total number of women diagnosed
with AIDS in 1999. [NAACP 2001 Report Card]
OUTREACH
Of the 6,845.653 people who received "emergency
services" in 1997, 42% were White, 35% Black, and
16% were Hispanic. Of the 3,782, 476 people who
received "social services" in 1997, 43% were White,
24% were Black, and 23% were Hispanic. [Catholic
