If you are considering a vocation in God's Vineyard, there are a few things to remember:
-
Follow your heart. If you feel that you are being called by God to serve don't be afraid. It may seem like a terrifying prospect, but if you are truly called then there is nothing to be frightened of.
-
Pray. If you feel a call from God, pray for guidance. Know that God will lead you down the path that is right for you.
-
Speak to someone. You are not alone; there are many people out there who can help you during this time. All you need to do is go to your local parish, tell them you are considering a vocation and ask to speak to someone who can help.
-
Don't let doubts about your ability to serve stop you. Remember that God doesn't call the qualified, God qualifies the called. Place your trust in God.
Promoting and nurturing vocations is everyone's responsibility. There are many ways all of us can help.
If you know someone who is considering a vocation or who might be, especially if you are a family member of that person:
-
Be supportive. You must keep in mind that this is what they are called to do. They need your love and support.
-
Please don't be negative. Keep in mind that if this is what they are truly meant to do, this will make them happy.
I ask that all priests, religious brothers and sisters, as well as seminarians reach out to those who are discerning a vocation to serve. Here are a few things you can do to help:
-
Be available to answer questions. Take the time to sit down with someone who is discerning and perhaps tell them your story. Let them know they are not alone. I ask that you remember what it was like when you first began discerning. Remember how every encouraging word helped.
-
(For priests) Preach about vocations during Mass. Once again maybe tell your story. Your preaching gets the word out there, and like with me, it might ignite something in someone.
