
Diana L. Hayes is Associate Professor of
Systematic Theology at Georgetown University (D.C.).She has earned
the Juris Doctor (JD) degree from George Washington National Law
Center (Wash., DC), the STB and STL degrees from the Catholic
University of America (Wash., DC) and a PhD in Religious Studies
from the Catholic University f Louvain (Belgium) At Louvain, she was
also the first African American woman to earn the Pontifical
Doctorate in Sacred Theology(STD). During academic year 2002-03, she
was on sabbatical, having received a Womanist Sabbatical Year Grant
from the Interdenominational Theological Center (Atlanta, GA) where
she did research in Womanist Theology.
Dr. Hayes is the author of five books and
over 60 articles in journals and edited books. At this time, Dr.
Hayes is completing work on her sixth book; Forged in the Fiery
Furnace: African American Spirituality (Orbis).Her areas of interest
include Black and Womanist Theologies, Contextual Theologies in the
US, the intersection of race, class, and gender with religion,
religion and culture, religion and public life, African and African
American Religions and Spirituality and comparative religions.
Dr. Hayes has lectured widely in the US,
Africa, and Europe. In 1999, she held the Tuohy Chair in
Interreligious Dialogue at John Carroll University (Cleveland, OH).
In 2001, she received the US Catholic Award for Furthering the Cause
of Women in the Church and received the Elizabeth Seton Medal from
Mt. St. Joseph College (Cinn., OH) in 2003 for Outstanding Woman
Theologian. She holds two honorary doctorates, from Ursuline College
(Cleveland, OH) and St. Mary of the Elms College (Chicopee, MA) and
in June 2004 will receive an Honorary Doctorate from the Catholic
Theological Union in Chicago, IL.
