Neighbors are greeted in peace as we introduce ourselves as being part of the community for 80 years. We indicate our concern for their welfare by asking questions - How long have you lived here? Do you like the neighborhood? Do you have any concerns about the neighborhood? We have on hand a listing of resource telephone numbers, written in both English and Spanish languages, provided by the City of Los Angeles to deal with neighborhood needs.
We also distribute brochures and flyers, in English and Spanish, regarding activities at St. Brigid that are open to all in the community while Lewis Metropolitan provides a listing of activities at their church. Our neighbors are also invited to attend services at either church.
Some of the concerns and needs addressed by our neighbors and the insights picked up by the walkers include: gang activity/having to keep teens at home to keep them safe; violence in the community; speed bumps; graffiti; trash pick-up; clean streets; senior services; need for Block Club; need programs for kids and teens; more police in the community; too many parties/loud noise; new residents - un-churched who need a visit; persons dealing with grief, who want visit from pastor or representative; more unity in the community. These are the same concerns of every neighbor living in any neighborhood.
